  • Life is Strange 2 works to deconstruct the series’ power fantasy | Unwinnable Malindy Hetfeld considers how a shift in narrative framing and the adoption of a more politically-charged setting allow Life Is Strange 2 to subvert some of the power fantasy tropes embraced by its predecessor.
  • The Nukes of ‘Fallout 76’ Are Where Power Fantasies Hit a Breaking Point – Waypoint Cameron Kunzelman examines the nuke-happy Fallout 76 and concludes that power fantasies in games have reached a troubling, untenable, and ultimately paradoxical zenith.

    Chris Avellone on RPG Conventions

Last week saw the ‘Framework’ conference in Melbourne, and Kotaku Editor David Wildgoose attended a lecture given by Chris Avellone – he of Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2, and Knights of the Old Republic 2 fame. In a nice recap, Wildgoose talks about how Avellone turned his disdain for RPG clichés and conventions to his advantage:

In Knights of the Old Republic 2, Avellone hated Star Wars and the Force. In particular, he hated the concept of predestination implicit within the Force. So he built the game’s story and characters around this idea. He focused on what a

Part of the power of the environment was the way in which it was used to tell a story. Steven O’Dell compared the player’s journey through Rapture to a guided tour of a dying city, one in which the enormously detailed spaces tell a story through the way they are designed. Wes Erdelack points out that the much-loved environmental storytelling of Fallout 3 has some roots in the construction of Rapture’s spaces. While the audio logs constitute the most powerful storytelling in BioShock, the game’s…

If you are ever at all amused (slash annoyed), however, by my evangelical attitude to Far Cry 2 you now know precisely who to blame! Duncan Fyfe for influencing my purchasing decision more than six months before ever first contemplating the game.

Alec Meer talks a little about Anne Anthropy’s ‘When Pigs Fly’. I’m including it here not because it’s news (that’s not what TWIVGB’s about, yo) but because his analysis is spot on about the game to the point of being rather insightful.

It’s hard, it really is. Someone will say [in the comments] that it’s not and that the rest of us are a bunch of wimps, but it’s

…a useful break-down that I’ve been thinking about myself for a while – describing the different levels that non-linearity can happen as ‘micro’, ‘macro’, ‘structural’ and ‘meta’. I think this is a seriously fantastic discussion and it’s this week’s must read. I should add that I discovered Lyndon’s blog via his pacifist play-through of the original Fallout. It’s also an engaging read.

Michel McBride does a really nice analysis of the character and role of The Riddler in Batman: Arkham Asylum and how the old spectre of Ludonarrative dissonance comes back to haunt.
