Josh Trevett continued his critical playthrough of the first Souls game, this time highlighting the way the level design reflects Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey. This series brings a lot of useful insights to the game, and I look forward to seeing more of it.

In a deeper dive, Heather Alexandra delves into Fallout 4, turning a critical eye to a game you’re probably all still playing. In particular, she compares it to previous entries in the Fallout series in order to get at what it does both right and wrong.

Exploring another open world roleplaying game, History Respawned turned an eye to Red Dead Redemption, exploring both the historical West and the way it has changed in the American imagination over the years throughout fiction and film.

…I think it would be content analysis. Basically, what we did was we went on to App Annie, which is an analytics company that provides the sales data for all the apps on the app stores, and we captured the top ranking list on a particular date. Using that list, which was our sample, we downloaded all the games from the Apple App Store. And we played those games for up to 40 minutes, basically, until we found a loot box. And we also tried to find the probability disclosures for those loot boxes both inside the game and externally…

Welcome back readers.

If you missed it earlier this week, we announced our Blogger of the Year for 2019, so check that out if you haven’t already!

Meanwhile, there’s a good chance you’re spending more time indoors this week. It seems doomsday preppers (and, uhh, doomsday scalpers?) have panic-bought all the toilet paper on store shelves in my neighborhood, which is as hilarious as it is frustrating. One thing that remains in ample supply is quality critical games writing, which makes sense given how people seem to be spending their forced days off.

March Roundup: ‘Extended Play’

I want to make this clear from the get-go: there are no April Fool’s jokes to be found here. Just 100% undiluted Blogs of the Round Table. This month, we were discussing “Extended Play”

“Have you ever been so immersed or so invested in a game that it bleeds over (or extends over, if you will) the border of the screen and into your life? Maybe after a particularly gruelling game session, you incorporated the game into your dream. Maybe while shopping at the grocery store you momentarily had to fight off the urge to see how

What should games cost?

Recently, Amazon.com purchased one of the larger game portals, Reflexive Arcade. As part of the integration, Amazon chose to lower the prices on all the casual arcade games to $9.99. This angered publishers , causing PopCap and others to pull their games from the portal.

Jeff Tunnel (founder of Garage Games, and currently at Push Button Labs) says this about Amazon’s price change :

Now the flood gates have been opened, and I am telling you to look out below. Today Reflexive, recently acquired by Amazon, opened their new download store, with lowered front tier pricing

…The Bad, The Ugly – No Escape Kaile Hultner reports back from time with Sakaguchi et al.’s newest JRPG, situating it in the context of the curation, precarity, and inevitable disappearance of mobile games.

“I’d argue that Apple is now actively deciding what the “mobile games canon” is, rather than passively letting the App Store ebb and flow. If you’re not part of the canon, the App Store is now even more likely to just swallow you up – if not now, then some day.”
